Filtration and valve repairs in Dicky Beach

Sunshine Coast Region, QLD

When the pool never quite clears, start at the filter

Filter, media and multiport valve repairs across Dicky Beach, diagnosed before anything is replaced

Dicky Beach is a long-settled pocket. At the 2021 Census its median age was 53, 42.8% of occupied private dwellings were owned outright, and 17.4% of all private dwellings were unoccupied on Census night — the profile of a suburb held by long-term owners with a real share of part-time and holiday occupancy. It is also more mixed than its neighbours in built form: 65.3% separate houses, but 23.0% semi-detached, row or townhouse dwellings. Pools here tend to have been in the ground a long time, and their equipment pads have usually been assembled from more than one era.

Filtration is the fault owners tolerate longest, because the pool does not fail outright. It just never quite gets clear, the chemical bill creeps up, and the backwash handle gets pulled more often than it should. By the time someone calls, the water has usually been fighting the filter for a season.

That patience is expensive in a suburb where a lot of plant is old enough that the fault could be in any of three or four components. Diagnosing which one has actually failed is what decides whether this is a part or a replacement — and on a sound filter body, it is very often a part.

Local conditions

Why it matters here

Where 42.8% of occupied dwellings are owned outright and the median age is 53, pools do not turn over with the property market. They stay, they get added to, and their equipment ends up spanning decades: a filter body from one era, a multiport from another, a pump from a third. Filtration is where that shows first, because the media and the valve internals are the wearing parts.

The occupancy pattern compounds it. With 17.4% of private dwellings unoccupied on Census night, a meaningful share of these pools run for stretches with nobody watching them. A filter that has begun to channel, or a valve that has started to bypass, does not produce an alarm. It produces a slow decline that is only obvious when somebody arrives and looks at the water.

What we get called to

Common local faults

The fault

Pressure climbs fast after every backwash

Why it happens

Degraded or channelled media, or a cartridge that has collapsed internally.

Why it matters

Backwashing more often treats the symptom, wastes water, and does nothing for the cause. The filter is no longer filtering the way the gauge suggests.

How we help

We test the system rather than reading the gauge alone, and where the media is the fault we say so — a media change is a different job to a filter replacement, and much less of one.

The fault

Sand or grit is coming back into the pool

Why it happens

A cracked lateral or a failed standpipe inside a sand filter.

Why it matters

It looks like the filter has given up entirely, which is how owners end up buying a whole unit.

How we help

These are serviceable internal components. We open the filter, identify the broken part and price the repair against the replacement so both numbers are in front of you.

The fault

Water bypasses the filter and nothing on the gauge says so

Why it happens

A worn multiport spider gasket lets water take the short route between valve positions.

Why it matters

The filter is only partly doing its job. The pool needs more chemical to hold the same result, and the cause is invisible from the pool deck.

How we help

Valve internals — spider gasket, handle, seals — are replaceable, and this is one of the faults most often missed when a filter is condemned on symptoms.

The fault

Poor flow with normal pressure sends people to the wrong end of the system

Why it happens

Suction-side restrictions and air leaks present as a filtration problem while sitting upstream of the filter.

Why it matters

Swapping the filter is an expensive way to not fix it.

How we help

Flow and pressure are tested across the whole circuit, so the component that has actually failed is the one that gets quoted.

The fault

Equipment pads assembled over three decades

Why it happens

Long-held properties accumulate equipment: a part replaced here, an upgrade there, rarely a matched set.

Why it matters

Mismatched plumbing and valves make every subsequent fault harder and more expensive to diagnose.

How we help

Where it is worth doing, we will tidy the plumbing, standardise the valves and match the components so the system works as one — and where it is not worth doing, we will say that instead.

What we repair

Repair services

Filter repairs and media replacement

Sand, cartridge and glass media systems serviced — laterals, standpipes, internal repairs and media changeover, with the system rebalanced afterwards.

On a sound filter body the internals are usually worth repairing. The body normally outlives several sets of them.

Book a filter repair

Multiport valve servicing

Spider gasket replacement, handle and seal repairs, and diagnosis of the bypass faults that quietly stop a filter filtering.

This is the fault most often missed when an older filter gets condemned on symptoms alone.

Flow and pressure diagnostics

Testing across the whole circuit to find the suction-side air leaks and restrictions commonly misdiagnosed as filter failure.

Poor flow with normal pressure almost always points upstream of the filter, not at it.

Pump repairs and upgrades

Seals, bearings and impellers, plus variable-speed replacement where an old single-speed pump is costing more to run than it is worth.

Worth considering on a pool that runs unattended for weeks at a time.

Pool shop and water testing at 134 Bulcock Street

Over-the-counter water testing with a dosing plan, plus chemicals, parts and equipment from the Caloundra counter.

Parts for older filtration are stocked rather than special-ordered, which is what makes a repair competitive with a replacement.

Credentials and cover

Billabong Pool Service & Supply publishes ABN 63 010 047 239 and QBCC Licence No. 69021 in its own site footer. The nearest counter is the Caloundra branch at 134 Bulcock Street, Caloundra QLD 4551 on (07) 5438 1588, trading Monday to Friday 8:00am–4:30pm and Saturday 8:00am–12:00pm — a shop with a parts counter behind it, which is what makes repairing older filtration practical rather than theoretical. There is no Billabong shopfront in Dicky Beach.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my filter pressure rise so quickly after a backwash?

Usually degraded or channelled media, or a cartridge that has collapsed internally. Backwashing more often treats the symptom and wastes water — if pressure climbs straight back, the media itself is the thing to look at.

There is sand coming back into my pool. Is the filter finished?

Almost always it is a cracked lateral or a failed standpipe inside the filter. Both are repairable components. A filter body in sound condition does not need replacing because an internal part broke.

How do I know whether it is the filter or something else?

By the combination. Rising pressure points at media; sand in the pool points at internals; a pool that never clears with normal pressure often points at a worn valve gasket or a suction-side air leak. We test the circuit rather than reading the gauge and guessing.

Should I repair or replace an older filter?

It depends on the condition of the body and what has failed. Internals — laterals, standpipes, gaskets, valve components — are frequently worth repairing. A corroded or cracked body is not. We will price both so the comparison is real.

How long will my pool be out of action?

Most filter and valve work is a single visit. A media change takes longer, and we will tell you the downtime up front. If the property is let, we can schedule around a changeover where the calendar allows it.

Can you work on equipment that is well past its current model year?

Usually yes. Parts for older filtration are held and sourced at the Caloundra counter rather than defaulting to a replacement quote — which is the point of having a shop behind the van.

Next step

If your pool needs more chemical than it used to and never quite looks right, the filtration is the place to start looking. Call the Caloundra branch on (07) 5438 1588 or send the details through and we will diagnose what has failed, then price the repair against the replacement so you can weigh both.
