A pool pump is the one piece of equipment that cannot be worked around. When it stops, everything stops — filtration, chlorination, heating and cleaning all depend on water moving. Moffat Beach is a suburb where that matters more than average: at the 2021 Census, 30.3% of its occupied private dwellings were rented and 17.4% of all private dwellings were unoccupied on Census night, so a real share of these pools are running with nobody on site to hear a pump start to complain. Most pump failures announce themselves before they happen. The noise changes, the prime gets harder to hold, the motor runs hotter than it used to. Caught at that point it is usually a seal or a bearing. Left alone, it becomes a motor — and in February, it becomes a green pool on top of a motor.

The other half of the problem is that a pump under strain and a pump at fault look identical. A blocked impeller, a cracked basket or an air leak on the suction side will all present as a failing pump while the pump itself is fine.

The first is organic load: the headland and the streets behind it carry mature tree cover, and everything that drops off it ends up in the skimmer, the basket and eventually the impeller. The second is who is watching. With nearly a third of occupied dwellings rented and 17.4% of dwellings unoccupied on Census night, plenty of these pools are serviced or checked rather than lived beside. Nobody hears the bearing start. The first report is often "the pool has gone cloudy", which is a circulation fault by the time it looks like a water fault — and by then the cheap repair window has usually closed.

My pump is noisy but still working. Is that urgent?

Fairly. A grinding or rumbling noise usually means bearings, and bearings that fail take the motor with them. Repaired early it is a modest job; left alone it is a replacement.

Why does my pump keep losing prime?

Air is getting in — commonly a perished lid o-ring, a cracked basket, or a leak on the suction side. All are inexpensive to fix, and all cause real damage if they are left, because a pump running dry destroys its seal quickly.

There is water dripping from under the motor. What is that?

A failed mechanical seal. Get it done promptly: once water reaches the bearings, a seal replacement becomes a motor replacement.

Can you repair my pump or do I need a new one?

Often repair. Seals, bearings and impellers are all serviceable parts. We recommend replacement when the motor itself is gone, or when the running cost of the old unit makes the sums obvious — and we will show you both numbers.

My flow is poor but the pump sounds fine. What should I check?

Baskets and impeller first. With the leaf and bark load around the headland, debris past a cracked basket will choke flow entirely and present exactly like a failing pump. It is the cheapest thing on the list to rule out.

How quickly can you come out if the pool has stopped circulating?

Loss of circulation in summer is prioritised over routine work, because a pool with no flow goes backwards within days and the recovery costs more than the repair. Tell us when you call that the pump is not running.
