Sunshine Coast Region, QLD

Equipment, parts and repairs from one building on Bulcock Street

Pumps, filters, chlorinators, heating, robotic cleaners, covers and pool-side hardware for the Caloundra beach suburbs, with the service team next to the counter

The Caloundra store is at 134 Bulcock Street, Caloundra QLD 4551, on 07 5438 1588, trading Monday to Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm and Saturday 8:00am to 12:00pm. The service and repair team works from the same building, which is the point of the place: a part bought over the counter can be fitted, a failed pump can be looked at by the people who stock its replacement, and the answer to "repair or replace" comes from someone who does both.

Most pool problems in the Caloundra beach suburbs arrive at the counter as a symptom: cloudy water, a pump that hums and does not push, a chlorinator that reads fine and makes nothing, a heater that never gets the pool past lukewarm. The store is organised around the equipment behind each of those rather than around the symptom, because the symptom is where the money gets wasted and the equipment is where it gets fixed.

Six suburbs use this store as their nearest, and each has its own page below, written around the question that suburb brings in most. The coast-wide view, with the Maroochydore and Noosa stores, is at Swimming Pool Store Sunshine Coast.

Local knowledge

Why it matters here

Caloundra's equipment works harder than the same equipment inland. Sunshine Coast Airport, the nearest Bureau station, records mean daily maximums from 21.2 °C in July to 29.1 °C in January, so the pump is running and the sanitiser being made or dosed in every month of the year. Mean minimums fall to 9.7 °C in July, and the water follows the nights, which is why an unheated pool here has a shorter season than the days suggest. 710 mm of the airport's 1,492.6 mm annual rainfall falls between December and March, much of it in storms that load the filter and the cleaner in an afternoon. And the beach suburbs sit in salt air with a 9am humidity that averages 71% across the year, which corrodes every metal fitting on the pad.

The six pages take one piece of that each. Currimundi is about bringing a water sample before buying anything, because the reading decides the purchase. Dicky Beach asks whether the equipment is worth keeping: pumps, filters and chlorinators, with an honest answer on repair versus replace. Moffat Beach is the suburb where a good robotic cleaner earns its keep, with covers and blankets alongside.

Kings Beach is written for owners, caretakers and building managers a few minutes from the beachfront who need the part on the shelf today. Shelly Beach compares solar, heat pump and gas heating on the pool rather than on a brochure, because the cheapest heater to buy is rarely the cheapest to own. Golden Beach covers handrails, lighting and pool-side hardware for getting in and out safely for years yet.

What owners bring us

Common local challenges

The challenge

The pump that hums and does not push

Why it happens

Seals, bearings and impellers wear through years of daily running, and salt air corrodes the terminals. The failure usually shows in the first hot week of spring, when the run time goes up.

Why it matters

Without circulation, sanitiser cannot reach the water and the pool turns within days in summer heat. It is the most expensive kind of green pool.

How we help

Replacement pumps and the parts that go before the pump does, seals, lids, baskets and unions, on the wall at Bulcock Street. If it is a repair rather than a replacement, the service team is in the same building.

The challenge

Repair or replace, decided honestly

Why it happens

An owner brings in a pump, filter or chlorinator that has failed and is offered a new one, because a new one is on the shelf and a repair takes a diagnosis.

Why it matters

Equipment that had years left is written off, or equipment that was finished is patched and fails again in January. Either way the owner pays twice.

How we help

The store and the service team share a building, so the answer comes from someone who does both. The Dicky Beach page above is written around exactly this question.

The challenge

A chlorinator that reads fine and makes nothing

Why it happens

A salt cell has a working life, and scale from unbalanced water shortens it. Low salt makes the unit work harder for less. Either way the water reads low on chlorine while the unit reports it is running.

Why it matters

Owners dose by hand to cover it, paying for chlorine the unit should be making, and the cell is written off when a clean or a balance would have saved it.

How we help

A water test first, then a straight answer on whether the cell is spent or the water is the problem. Cells, units and the salt to run them are on the shelf.

The challenge

Heating that never gets past lukewarm

Why it happens

The heater was sized for a smaller pool, or fitted without a cover, or it is the wrong type for when the owner actually wants to swim. Mean overnight minimums of 9.7 °C in July take the heat back out of an uncovered pool every night.

Why it matters

The bill arrives and the season does not lengthen. The cheapest heater to buy is rarely the cheapest to own.

How we help

Solar, gas and electric heat-pump systems compared on your pool's volume, cover and use. Bring the pool's rough dimensions and a photo of the pad, and the Shelly Beach page above walks through the comparison.

The challenge

Storm debris all at once

Why it happens

Almost half the year's rain falls December to March, much of it in storms that put leaves, sand and paving grit into a beach-suburb pool in an afternoon.

Why it matters

The filter loads, the pressure climbs, the pump strains and the cleaner fills. A cartridge or media bed that was already due fails under the load.

How we help

Cartridges, filter media, baskets, covers and robotic cleaners matched to what the pool collects, fine beach sand or leaf litter, and to how often anyone is there to empty them.

The challenge

Getting in and out of the pool safely

Why it happens

Pool-side metalwork in salt air corrodes, steps get slippery, and the pool that was easy to use at fifty is not at seventy. Holiday lets have the same problem with guests who do not know the pool.

Why it matters

A fall at the pool edge is the injury nobody plans for, and the hardware that prevents it is cheap next to the consequence.

How we help

Saftron handrails built to resist corrosion and LedecSun solar-powered LED lights, stocked at the store and covered in detail on the Golden Beach page above.

What we do

Services and stock

Pumps and filters

Replacement pumps, cartridge and media filters, and the seals, lids, baskets and unions that go before the pump does.

Repair or replace is decided by the people who do both, in the same building as the counter.

Repair or replace, Dicky Beach

Chlorinators and cells

Salt chlorinator units, replacement cells and the salt to run them, with a water test first to tell a spent cell from unbalanced water.

A cell coated in scale is cleaned and balanced, not replaced. We will say which it is.

Pool repairs

Robotic cleaners, covers and blankets

Dolphin robotic cleaners matched to what the pool collects, and covers and blankets that hold heat and keep the storm debris out.

The Moffat Beach page is written around the suburb where a good cleaner earns its keep.

Cleaners and covers, Moffat Beach

Pool heating

Solar, gas and electric heat-pump systems compared on your pool's volume, cover and use rather than on a brochure.

Overnight minimums of 9.7 °C in July take the heat back out of an uncovered pool every night; the cover is part of every heating answer.

Spare parts over the counter

Baskets, lids, cartridges, seals, cells, unions and fittings across the common brands. Bring the old part in and we will match it.

The Kings Beach page is written for owners, caretakers and building managers who need the part today.

Parts on the shelf, Kings Beach

Handrails and solar lighting

Saftron handrails built to resist corrosion and LedecSun solar-powered LED pool lights, for getting in and out safely and seeing the pool at night.

Salt air is hard on pool-side metalwork; the handrail range is chosen for it. Detail on the Golden Beach page.

Who does the work

Credentials and cover

Billabong Pool Service & Supply is family owned and publishes ABN 63 010 047 239 and QBCC Licence No. 69021 in the footer of every page on this site. The service and repair team works from the same Bulcock Street building as the store. Billabong does not issue pool safety certificates and does not perform pool safety inspections; that is a licensed pool safety inspector's work.

Frequently asked questions

Where exactly is the Caloundra store?

134 Bulcock Street, Caloundra QLD 4551, on 07 5438 1588. Monday to Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm, Saturday 8:00am to 12:00pm, closed Sunday. The map is further down this page.

Which suburbs use the Caloundra store?

The beach suburbs from Golden Beach up to Currimundi: Currimundi, Dicky Beach, Moffat Beach, Kings Beach, Shelly Beach and Golden Beach, each with its own page linked above. Anyone is welcome from further afield; the Maroochydore and Noosa stores may simply be closer.

What should I bring in to buy a replacement part?

The old part, a photo of the equipment pad and the pool's rough dimensions. The part tells us the fitting, the photo tells us what it connects to, and the size tells us whether the equipment was right for the pool in the first place.

Can you tell me whether my pump is worth repairing?

Yes. The service team works from the same building as the store, so the answer comes from someone who repairs and replaces both. Bring the pump, or a photo and a description of what it does when it runs.

Does the store test water as well as sell equipment?

Yes. Bring a sample in a clean sealed container. A chlorinator that has "stopped working", for instance, is a water question before it is an equipment question, because unbalanced water shortens the life of everything on the pad.

If I buy a heater or a pump, can it be fitted?

The service and repair team works from the same building as the store. Ask at the counter when you buy; whether the job is a fitting or a repair, it is the same people.

Is the store the same as the pool supply shop at the same address?

Same address, same counter, same people. The pool supply shop pages are written around water and chemistry; the store pages, this one included, are written around equipment. Whichever page brought you here, 134 Bulcock Street is where both live.

Next step

Bring the old part, a photo of the equipment pad and the pool's rough size to 134 Bulcock Street, and the answer starts from what is actually fitted. Call 07 5438 1588 if you would rather check we are open first. The Maroochydore and Noosa stores are on the coast-wide page if one of those is closer.
