The suburb where a good cleaner earns its keep

Robotic cleaners, covers and blankets for Moffat Beach back-yard pools, serviced at the same counter

Moffat Beach is a suburb of back yards. At the 2021 Census 75.3% of its occupied dwellings were separate houses, with 2,691 residents and a median age of 47 — houses with gardens rather than apartment blocks with shared water. That is what puts this suburb in a particular part of our shop. Where a pool sits in a planted yard, debris is the standing problem, and the answer is usually a cleaner and a cover rather than another drum of chlorine.

Debris is a chemistry problem before it is a tidiness problem. Leaf litter and bark break down in the water and consume sanitiser, so an owner sees rising chlorine demand and treats it as a dosing failure. It is not. It is organic load, and the cheapest place to deal with it is before it sinks.

So this is where the Moffat Beach conversation usually starts: robotic cleaners, covers, and the accessories that turn a daily netting job into something you barely think about.

Local knowledge

Why it matters here

Robots are not interchangeable, and the wrong one is an expensive disappointment. Four questions settle it, and we would rather ask them than sell you the unit nearest the door.

**What are you picking up?** Fine sand and silt need a different filtration cartridge to leaves and bark. A pool in a planted yard often needs to handle both, and a machine set up for one will disappoint on the other.

**Does it need to climb?** Waterline and wall cleaning matters if your pool grows a tide mark. Floor-only units are cheaper and perfectly adequate for some pools.

**What is the shape and the surface?** Steps, benches, beach entries, and tiled versus pebble interiors all change what tracks properly and what gets stuck.

**Who is lifting it out?** Weight is the single most common reason a robot ends up in the shed. It is a fair thing to care about and we will not talk you out of caring about it.

We stock and service Dolphin, which matters after the sale rather than during it: if something goes wrong the unit comes back to this counter rather than being posted interstate.

What owners come in for

Common local challenges

The challenge

Rising chlorine demand that looks like a dosing problem

Why it happens

Organic matter that has sunk keeps consuming sanitiser out of sight. The water can look clear while the demand climbs.

Why it matters

The owner buys more chemical to fight a debris problem, which is the expensive way round and never actually resolves.

How we help

Free water testing at the counter will show the demand; the fix is usually mechanical, and we will say so rather than sell you the chemistry.

The challenge

Buying a robot that does not suit the pool

Why it happens

Units get chosen on price or on a shelf recommendation rather than on debris type, wall climbing, pool shape and lift weight.

Why it matters

A cleaner that will not climb, or is too heavy to lift out, stops being used — which is the most expensive outcome of all.

How we help

We work through the four questions above before recommending anything, and we would rather show you one running than have you take our word for it.

The challenge

A suction cleaner that is struggling

Why it happens

Suction cleaners handle bulk leaf load but draw everything through the filter and pump rather than into their own bag, and they tend to leave walls and fine debris.

Why it matters

The load moves from the pool floor into the filter and the pump, which is where it costs more.

How we help

If your suction cleaner keeps the pool clean, no change is needed and we will say so. Where it struggles is fine debris and walls, and that is a specific problem with a specific answer.

The challenge

A robot that has stopped climbing

Why it happens

Worn tracks or brushes, a clogged cartridge, or a blocked impeller account for most of it.

Why it matters

Owners assume the unit has failed and replace something that needed a service.

How we help

Bring it in. Because we service what we sell, the diagnosis happens here rather than by post.

The challenge

Uncertainty about whether a blanket is worth it

Why it happens

Covers are unglamorous and the benefit is spread across evaporation, chemistry and warmth rather than being one visible thing.

Why it matters

The owner keeps paying for all three losses instead.

How we help

We will measure, order to your pool's shape and set out what it changes — and tell you if a roller is not worth it for how your household will actually use it.

Robotic pool cleaners

Dolphin robotic cleaners, matched to your pool's debris type, shape, surface and who has to lift it out.

Pool covers and blankets

Measured and ordered to your pool's shape, with honest advice on roller options.

On a shaded, tree-heavy pool a blanket usually pays for itself in chemical alone.

Cleaner servicing and spares

Tracks, brushes, cartridges and impellers — plus diagnosis when a unit stops climbing.

Most "dead" robots are a worn part or a blockage. Bring it in before replacing it.

Free water testing

The quickest way to tell whether your rising chlorine demand is chemistry or debris.

Nets, brushes and hand tools

Replacement nets, poles, brushes and skimmer baskets.

Even with a robot, the leaf net is what handles the day after a windy night.

Check the shelves

Pool chemicals

Chlorine and salt, balancers, clarifiers, flocculants and algaecides.

Bought against your readings rather than a guess — which on a debris-heavy pool usually means less than expected once the mechanical side is right.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Do I still need a robotic cleaner if I already have a suction cleaner?

If your suction cleaner handles the leaf load and the pool stays clean, no. Where they struggle is fine debris and walls, and they draw everything through your filter and pump rather than into their own bag — so the load moves rather than leaving.

Can I see one working before I buy?

Come in and ask. We would rather demonstrate than have you take our word for it.

My robot has stopped climbing the walls. Is it dead?

Usually not. Worn tracks or brushes, a clogged cartridge or a blocked impeller account for most of it. Bring it in and we will look at it before you replace anything.

Will a blanket make my pool too warm in summer?

It can at the peak of summer, which is when you simply leave it off. The gain is at the shoulders of the season — and the leaves it keeps out are a year-round benefit.

How do I choose between models?

Four things: what you are picking up, whether it needs to climb walls, your pool's shape and surface, and who is lifting it out of the water. Bring those answers in and the choice narrows quickly.

My chlorine use has gone up but the water looks clear. Why?

Usually organic load that has already sunk — leaf litter and bark consuming sanitiser out of sight. A free test will show the demand. The fix is mechanical rather than chemical.

Next step

Tired of netting leaves before every swim? Come and see what actually suits your pool — bring the pool's dimensions and a rough idea of what falls into it, and ask to see a cleaner running. Call 07 5438 1588 first if you would like to check one is set up.
