The equipment side of the shop, at three counters on the coast

Pumps, filters, chlorinators, heating, robotic cleaners, covers and the parts that wear out, from the Caloundra, Maroochydore and Noosa stores

Billabong's three stores, at 134 Bulcock Street in Caloundra, 7 Kayleigh Drive in Buderim for the Maroochydore side of the coast, and 20 Rene Street in Noosaville, carry the equipment a coastal pool runs on and the parts it wears out. The service team works from the same three addresses, so what is sold over the counter can be fitted, and what fails on the pad can be diagnosed by the people who stock its replacement. This page is the front door to all three stores and to the suburb pages beneath them.

A pool on this coast is a machine as much as a body of water. The pump moves it, the filter cleans it, the chlorinator or the chemical dose sanitises it, and the heater decides how long the season runs. Most of what goes wrong with the water starts with one of those. That is why each Billabong store has a pump and chlorinator wall as well as a chemical wall, and why the first question at the counter is often "what is the equipment doing?" rather than "what does the water look like?"

The equipment also has a harder life here than inland. Mean daily maximums at Sunshine Coast Airport sit between 21.2 °C in July and 29.1 °C in January, so the pump runs and the sanitiser is consumed in every month of the year. The airport averages 1,492.6 mm of rain, almost half of it December to March, which loads the filter and the cleaner with debris in a few big falls. And close to the beach, salt air and a 9am humidity that averages 71% across the year keep every metal fitting at the pad damp and corroding.

Local knowledge

Why it matters here

Three groups of buyers walk into the three stores, and the shelves are laid out for all of them. Owner-occupiers with a backyard pool, which on this coast is most people: 73.1% of occupied homes in the Sunshine Coast Region and 79.5% in Noosa Shire were separate houses at the 2021 Census. Managers and caretakers of body-corporate pools, who need the part today and the history of the equipment kept somewhere. And owners of holiday homes looked after from a distance, a large group at the northern end, where 18.0% of Noosa Shire's private dwellings were unoccupied on Census night against 9.3% across the Sunshine Coast Region.

The suburb pages below carry the detail for each part of the coast, grouped by the store that serves them.

What owners bring us

Common local challenges

The challenge

The pump that fails in the first hot week

Why it happens

A pump that has run every day for years through salt air and a 71% average morning humidity is asked to work hardest in the first hot week of spring, when the water warms and the run time goes up. Bearings, seals and terminals that were marginal in August fail in November.

Why it matters

Without circulation, sanitiser cannot reach the water and the pool turns within days in summer heat. A failed pump is the most expensive kind of green pool.

How we help

Replacement pumps and the parts that go before the pump does, seals, lids, baskets and unions, on the wall at each store. The service team works from the same address if it is a repair rather than a replacement.

The challenge

A chlorinator that has stopped making chlorine

Why it happens

A salt chlorinator's cell has a working life, and it shortens when the water it runs in is out of balance. Scale from hard water coats the plates; low salt makes the unit work harder for less.

Why it matters

The water reads low on chlorine and owners dose by hand to cover it, paying for chlorine the unit should be making. The cell is written off when a clean or a balance would have saved it.

How we help

A water test first, then an honest answer on whether the cell is spent or the water is the problem. Cells, units and the salt to run them are stocked at all three stores.

The challenge

Heating a pool that the air, not the water, keeps cold

Why it happens

Mean maximums never drop below 21.2 °C here, but mean minimums fall to 9.7 °C in July and the water follows the nights, not the days. An unheated pool is usable for a shorter season than the weather suggests.

Why it matters

The cheapest heater to buy is rarely the cheapest to own, and the wrong type for the pool's size, cover and use runs up a bill without lengthening the season much.

How we help

Solar, gas and electric heat-pump systems, compared on your pool rather than on a brochure: its volume, whether it has a cover, and when you actually want to swim.

The challenge

Debris that arrives all at once

Why it happens

710 mm of the airport's 1,492.6 mm annual rainfall falls December to March, much of it in storms that put leaves, sand and paving grit into the pool in an afternoon.

Why it matters

The filter loads, the pressure climbs, the pump strains and the cleaner fills. A cartridge or media bed that was due for replacement fails under the load.

How we help

Cartridges, filter media, baskets and robotic cleaners matched to what the pool collects, fine sand or leaf litter, and to how often anyone is there to empty them.

The challenge

Pools looked after from a distance

Why it happens

18.0% of Noosa Shire's private dwellings and 9.3% of the Sunshine Coast Region's were unoccupied on Census night: holiday homes and lets whose equipment nobody hears running.

Why it matters

A pump that trips, a timer that resets after a storm or a cleaner that stalls goes unnoticed for weeks. Problems are found on arrival, on the first day of a holiday.

How we help

Timers, covers and a robotic cleaner on a schedule do the part of the job nobody is home for. The Noosa suburb pages above are written for this kind of ownership.

The challenge

Buying equipment sight unseen

Why it happens

An owner describes the pool from memory, and the counter guesses at the volume, the plumbing size and the age of what is already fitted.

Why it matters

The wrong pump size, the wrong union or a heater sized for a smaller pool is a return trip at best and a system that never quite works at worst.

How we help

Bring the old part, a photo of the equipment pad and the pool's rough dimensions. Three things, and the answer is usually right the first time.

What we do

Services and stock

Pumps and filters

Replacement pumps, cartridge and media filters, and the seals, lids, baskets and unions that go before the pump does.

If it is a repair rather than a replacement, the service team is in the same building at all three stores.

Pool pump repairs

Chlorinators and cells

Salt chlorinator units, replacement cells and the salt to run them, with a water test first to tell a spent cell from unbalanced water.

A cell coated in scale from hard water is cleaned and balanced, not replaced. We will say which it is.

Pool repairs

Robotic pool cleaners

Dolphin robotic cleaners matched to what the pool collects, fine sand or leaf litter, and to how often anyone is there to empty them.

For a pool looked after from a distance, a cleaner on a schedule is the part of the job nobody is home for.

Pool heating

Solar, gas and electric heat-pump systems, compared on your pool's volume, cover and use rather than on a brochure.

Mean minimums fall to 9.7 °C in July here. The water follows the nights, which is why an unheated pool's season is shorter than the weather suggests.

Pool heating options

Covers and blankets

Covers and blankets that hold heat, cut evaporation and keep the wet-season debris out of the water.

The cheapest equipment decision on the coast, and the one that makes every heater on this page cheaper to run.

Covers and blankets

Handrails and solar lighting

Saftron handrails built to resist corrosion, and LedecSun solar-powered LED pool lights, for getting in and out safely and seeing the pool at night.

Salt air is hard on pool-side metalwork; the handrail range is chosen for it.

Credentials and cover

Billabong Pool Service & Supply is family owned and publishes ABN 63 010 047 239 and QBCC Licence No. 69021 in the footer of every page on this site. The service and repair team works from the same three addresses as the stores, so equipment sold over the counter can be fitted and equipment that fails can be diagnosed by the people who stock its replacement. Billabong does not issue pool safety certificates and does not perform pool safety inspections; that is a licensed pool safety inspector's work.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Which Billabong store is closest to me?

There are three. Caloundra is at 134 Bulcock Street, Caloundra; Maroochydore trades from 7 Kayleigh Drive, Buderim; Noosa is at 20 Rene Street, Noosaville. The map for each is further down this page, and the suburb pages linked above say which store serves which part of the coast.

What should I bring in to buy a replacement part?

The old part, a photo of the equipment pad and the pool's rough dimensions. The part tells us the fitting, the photo tells us what it connects to, and the size tells us whether the equipment was right for the pool in the first place.

Can I have a pump or heater matched to my pool rather than picking one off the shelf?

Yes, and that is the point of bringing the pool's size and a photo of the pad. Pump flow, filter size and heater capacity all depend on the volume and on how the pool is used; a unit sized for a smaller pool never quite works.

Do the stores test water as well as sell equipment?

Yes. Bring a sample in a clean sealed container. Most equipment questions, a chlorinator that has "stopped working" for instance, start with a water reading, because unbalanced water shortens the life of everything on the pad.

Is the Maroochydore store actually in Maroochydore?

No. It trades from 7 Kayleigh Drive, Buderim, on the Maroochydore side of the coast, and the business has always called it the Maroochydore store. The Caloundra and Noosa stores are in Caloundra and Noosaville respectively.

My pool is a holiday home. What should be on the pad?

A timer, a cover, and a robotic cleaner on a schedule. The three together cover most of what goes wrong between visits. Bring the details of what is fitted now and we will say what is missing.

If I buy equipment, can it be fitted?

The service and repair team works from the same three addresses as the stores. Ask at the counter when you buy; whether the job is a fitting or a repair, it is the same people.

Next step

Bring the old part, a photo of the equipment pad and the pool's rough size to the nearest store. Caloundra is on 07 5438 1588, the Maroochydore store at Kayleigh Drive, Buderim on 07 5443 2111, and the Noosa store on 07 5449 7855. All three trade Monday to Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm and Saturday 8:00am to 12:00pm.
