Pool Supply Shop Caloundra

Sunshine Coast Region, QLD

One counter on Bulcock Street, and seven suburbs of pools around it

Chemicals, parts and equipment with in-store water testing, from the Caloundra shop at 134 Bulcock Street

The Caloundra shop is at 134 Bulcock Street, Caloundra QLD 4551, on 07 5438 1588, trading Monday to Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm and Saturday 8:00am to 12:00pm. It is one of three Billabong shopfronts on the coast and the one that serves the southern end: the beach suburbs from Golden Beach up to Currimundi and the inland side at Little Mountain. Bring a water sample and the advice starts from a reading, not from the shelf.

Bulcock Street runs through a suburb that is not much like the ones it serves. At the 2021 Census the suburb of Caloundra had 3,932 residents with a median age of 58, and 48.1% of its occupied dwellings were flats, another 26.8% townhouses or semi-detached. 42.6% were rented and 26.6% of all private dwellings were unoccupied on Census night. Pools inside this suburb are mostly body-corporate and holiday pools, read by a manager or a cleaner rather than an owner.

The backyard pools are in the ring of suburbs around it, and that is who the counter mostly serves: owner-occupiers from Currimundi, Little Mountain and Golden Beach doing their own dosing, holiday-let managers from Kings Beach, and everyone in between. The same shelf serves both, but the advice is different, which is why each suburb has its own page.

Local water knowledge

What your pool needs here

The southern end of the coast gets the same weather as the rest of it. Sunshine Coast Airport, the nearest Bureau station, averages 1,492.6 mm of rain a year, with 710 mm of it between December and March, and daily maximums from 21.2 °C in July to 29.1 °C in January. What differs between the seven suburbs is the pools, and the seven pages below each take one problem the counter sees from that suburb more than from the others.

Currimundi is written around buying for the season the pool is actually in rather than reacting to what it looks like. Dicky Beach takes the three ways to sanitise a pool, salt, liquid and stabilised chlorine, and why they are not interchangeable. Moffat Beach is about recovery after a storm and why the order of the products matters more than the products. Kings Beach is written for pools that never get a quiet week, homes and holiday lets both, and for storing bulk chemicals safely in a unit block.

Shelly Beach covers the wear items nobody replaces until they break: cartridges, media, baskets and seals. Golden Beach takes the problems that sit on the surface rather than in the water, staining and scale, and identifying them before treating them. Little Mountain is about the pump doing the storm clean-up and what an ageing pump quietly costs to run.

The other two shops, at Kayleigh Drive in Buderim for the Maroochydore side and Rene Street in Noosaville, carry the same range.

What brings people in

The problems behind the purchase

The challenge

The pool that belongs to a body corporate

Why it happens

Nearly half the occupied dwellings in the suburb of Caloundra are flats. The pool is common property, looked after by a manager, a contractor or a rostered resident, and the person buying for it this month is not always the person who bought for it last month.

Why it matters

Nobody holds the history. The same imbalance gets corrected from scratch each time, and stabiliser creeps up unnoticed because each visit adds a little.

How we help

Bring the sample and, if anyone kept it, the previous reading. A test read against the last result shows what has changed rather than starting the correction from scratch.

The challenge

Chlorine that stops holding from spring

Why it happens

UV breaks down free chlorine, and daily maximums climb from 25.8 °C in October to 29.1 °C in January. Without enough stabiliser the dose is gone by the afternoon.

Why it matters

Owners read it as chlorine that has failed and buy more of it. The requirement moved; the product did not.

How we help

Stabiliser is part of every profile we run. We size chlorine, salt and stabiliser to the reading and the month, and say plainly when the answer is more of what you already use.

The challenge

A storm, then a cloudy pool by Monday

Why it happens

Almost half the year's rain, 710 mm of the 1,492.6 mm mean, falls December to March, much of it in big falls that dilute the water, drop alkalinity and pH, and wash debris in.

Why it matters

Sanitiser is spent on the debris and the water clouds. Chlorine added to unbalanced water is the common mistake, and the Moffat Beach page above is written around exactly this.

How we help

Skim, run the pump, then bring a sample before adding anything. Balancers, clarifier and sanitiser in the order they need adding, which is the part a bottle label cannot tell you.

The challenge

Wear items that fail in the first hot week

Why it happens

Cartridges, baskets, lids, seals and chlorinator cells wear quietly through winter and are asked to work hardest in the first hot week of spring. Close to the beach, salt air corrodes fittings and terminals as well.

Why it matters

A seized pump or a spent cell in November is a green pool by the weekend, and a service call that a part on the shelf would have prevented.

How we help

Bring the old part in and we will match it from the wall. If the part has failed because of something else, a pump drawing air or a cell run on unbalanced water, we say so before selling the replacement.

The challenge

Winter that is treated as an off-season

Why it happens

July's mean maximum is 21.2 °C and nobody is swimming, so the pump is shut down from June and the water looks fine for weeks.

Why it matters

Organic matter builds with no sanitiser and no circulation, and the first warm week in September turns it. A spring recovery costs more than a winter of light dosing.

How we help

A cover, a couple of hours of pump a day and a low chlorine residual. We would rather have that conversation in May than in September.

The challenge

Buying the product before the reading

Why it happens

Cloudy water, a green tinge and a chlorine smell each have several causes, and there is a product on the shelf for every one of them.

Why it matters

Money goes on correcting a pool rather than holding one, and the same trip gets made twice.

How we help

Ten minutes and a water sample at the Bulcock Street counter. Many samples come back fine, and we say so.

What is on the shelves

The pool that belongs to a body corporate

Nearly half the occupied dwellings in the suburb of Caloundra are flats. The pool is common property, looked after by a manager, a contractor or a rostered resident, and the person buying for it this month is not always the person who bought for it last month.

In-store water testing

A bench profile at the Bulcock Street counter: pH, chlorine, alkalinity, stabiliser and calcium hardness, with the advice following the reading.

Bring the previous result if you have one. On a body-corporate pool it is the only history anyone holds.

Chemicals and water care

Chlorine, salt, stabiliser, balancers, clarifiers and algaecides, sold with the dose and the order they need adding in.

Sized to the month rather than the shelf. Summer demand and winter demand are not the same pool.

Parts and wear items

Cartridges, media, baskets, lids, seals, cells, unions and fittings across the common brands. Bring the old part in and we will match it.

The Shelly Beach page above is written entirely around these: the things nobody replaces until they break.

Pumps and filters

Replacement pumps and filters, and straight numbers on what an ageing pump costs to keep running through a storm season.

If it is a repair rather than a replacement, the service team is in the same building.

Pool repairs

Robotic pool cleaners

Dolphin robotic cleaners matched to what your pool collects and to how often anyone is there to empty them.

For a holiday let or a body-corporate pool, a cleaner on a timer does the part of the job nobody is on site for.

Covers, blankets and heating

Covers and blankets that cut evaporation and keep debris out, and solar, gas and electric heating to lengthen the season.

The cover is the cheapest maintenance decision available here, and the one we would most like owners to make before June.

Advice before product

Why owners come back

Billabong Pool Service & Supply is family owned and publishes ABN 63 010 047 239 and QBCC Licence No. 69021 in the footer of every page on this site. The service team works out of the same Bulcock Street building as the shop, so if a repair or a piece of equipment turns out to be the real answer you are not sent somewhere else. Billabong does not issue pool safety certificates and does not perform pool safety inspections; that is a licensed pool safety inspector's work.

Frequently asked questions

Chlorine that stops holding from spring

Where exactly is the Caloundra shop?

134 Bulcock Street, Caloundra QLD 4551, on 07 5438 1588. Monday to Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm, Saturday 8:00am to 12:00pm, closed Sunday. The map is further down this page.

Which suburbs does the Caloundra shop serve?

The southern end of the coast: Currimundi, Dicky Beach, Moffat Beach, Kings Beach, Shelly Beach, Golden Beach and Little Mountain, each with its own page linked above. Anyone is welcome from further afield; the Maroochydore and Noosa shops may simply be closer.

How do I take a good water sample?

Elbow depth, away from the skimmer and the return jet, in a clean sealed container, brought in the same day and kept out of the sun on the drive over. A sample that has sat in a hot car reads differently from the pool it came from.

I look after a unit-block pool. What should I bring?

The sample, the last reading if anyone kept it, and a note of what was added since. Nearly half the dwellings in the suburb of Caloundra are flats, so this is a large part of what the counter does, and the history is what stops the same correction being made every month.

What should I do after a big storm?

Skim and vacuum the debris, run the pump, then bring a sample in before adding anything. A big fall dilutes the water and drops alkalinity and pH, so the order of correction matters more than the products.

Can you match a part if I bring the old one in?

Yes. Cartridges, baskets, lids, seals, cells, unions and fittings across the common brands are on the wall. If the part failed because of something else, we will say so before selling a replacement.

Is the water test the same at the other two shops?

Yes. The Maroochydore shop at 7 Kayleigh Drive, Buderim and the Noosa shop at 20 Rene Street, Noosaville run the same profile and carry the same range. Use whichever is nearest.

Next step

Bring a water sample to 134 Bulcock Street and buy only what the numbers call for. Call 07 5438 1588 if you would rather check we are open first, or find the Maroochydore and Noosa shops on the coast-wide page if one of those is closer.
