Pool salt and chlorine supplies stocked for Dicky Beach pool owners at Billabong Pool Service & Supply

Your Pool Supply Shop for Dicky Beach

Sunshine Coast Region, QLD

Three ways to sanitise a pool, and they are not interchangeable

Salt, chlorine, parts and equipment, with straight advice on which suits your setup

Dicky Beach is one of the older and more mixed pockets this shop serves — 1,921 residents at the 2021 Census, a median age of 53, and a housing stock that is only 65.3% separate houses with another 23.0% semi-detached. Some 17.4% of private dwellings were unoccupied on Census night. That mix shows up at the counter: original systems from decades ago alongside brand-new installs in rebuilt homes, and a lot of owners running one kind of sanitiser while buying products meant for another.

Salt, liquid and granular chlorine each suit different pools and each fail in different ways. Getting this right is the difference between a pool that holds its chlorine and one that never quite comes good no matter what you add.

If you are not certain what you are running, bring a photo of the equipment in. It takes a minute to sort out, and it changes every recommendation that follows.

Local water knowledge

What your pool needs here

With 42.8% of homes here owned outright and a median age of 53, a lot of Dicky Beach pools have been in the same hands for a long time — long enough to have changed sanitiser systems at least once. That is where most persistent water problems begin: a pool converted years ago, still dosed on the assumptions of the system it used to have.

The three systems are genuinely different in how they behave. A salt pool generates its own chlorine continuously and drifts alkaline as a consequence of how the cell works, so regular acid dosing is normal rather than a fault. A pool on liquid chlorine has no stabiliser coming in with the dose. A pool on stabilised granular chlorine is adding cyanuric acid every single time it is dosed, whether the owner intends it or not.

Applying one system's target ranges to another is the single most common fault we see here, and it is invisible without a test.

What brings people in

The problems behind the purchase

The challenge

Running one system while buying for another

Why it happens

A pool changes sanitiser system and nothing updates the habit. The products on the shelf at home stay the same.

Why it matters

Target ranges differ by system. Dosing a salt pool on a chlorinated pool's assumptions keeps it permanently slightly wrong.

How we help

We will tell you what you are actually running — bring a photo of the equipment if you are not sure — and what its ranges should be.

The challenge

Stabiliser accumulating from convenient dosing

Why it happens

Stabilised granular chlorine adds cyanuric acid with every dose. It is convenient, stores well, and for a couple of years works beautifully.

Why it matters

Cyanuric acid does not evaporate or break down; it only leaves when water leaves. Eventually it binds the chlorine so tightly it cannot sanitise, and the pool goes cloudy or green while the chlorine reading looks healthy.

How we help

Stabiliser is in every profile we run, so we flag the climb long before it becomes a drain-and-refill. The fix at that point is dilution, not more chemical.

The challenge

A salt pool whose pH will not stay put

Why it happens

Rising pH is inherent to how a salt cell works, not a fault in the equipment.

Why it matters

Owners read it as something broken and go looking for a repair, when the answer is a routine acid dose.

How we help

We stock the acid and alkalinity products as a routine purchase for salt-pool owners rather than an occasional one, and we explain why it recurs.

The challenge

Older equipment nobody stocks parts for

Why it happens

Dicky Beach pools span several decades of installs, and the current retail range does not cover all of it.

Why it matters

An owner told a part is unavailable often replaces a whole unit that did not need replacing.

How we help

We carry parts and knowledge across the eras, not just the current range, and can order most of what we do not hold. Bring the old part or a photo of the data plate.

What is on the shelves

Pool salt in bulk

Stored dry it keeps indefinitely, and it is cheaper by quantity — usually the least expensive bag you will buy all year.

Worth buying properly once rather than in small bags through the season.

Ask about bulk salt

Liquid and granular chlorine

Both stocked, with advice on which suits your pool — including whether the granular you are using is adding stabiliser you do not want.

The stabilised-granular question is the one we most often have to raise here.

Chlorinators and replacement cells

Replacement cells and units matched to your pool volume rather than sold on price alone.

A cell sized to the wrong volume never quite keeps up, no matter how it is run.

Balancers and pH correction

Acid and alkalinity products for the continuous alkaline drift that comes with running a salt pool.

A routine purchase for salt-pool owners here, not an occasional one.

See balancers

Free in-store water testing

A full bench profile including stabiliser — the reading that quietly explains why chlorine has stopped working, and the one home kits measure worst.

Free with no purchase condition. Bring a photo of your equipment too if you are unsure what you run.

Bring a sample in

Spare parts across the eras

Seals, o-rings, unions, baskets and cartridges across common brands, including gear we did not supply.

Dicky Beach pools span four decades of installs. Bring the old part or a photo of the data plate.

Why owners come back

Billabong Pool Service & Supply publishes ABN 63 010 047 239 and QBCC Licence No. 69021 in its own site footer. The shop is at 134 Bulcock Street, Caloundra QLD 4551 on 07 5438 1588, trading Monday to Friday 8:00am–4:30pm and Saturday 8:00am–12:00pm. The service team works out of the same building, so if a repair or a piece of equipment turns out to be the real answer you are not sent somewhere else. Billabong does **not** issue pool safety certificates and does not perform pool safety inspections — that is a licensed pool safety inspector's work.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is a salt pool chlorine-free?

No. A salt pool generates its own chlorine from the salt. Same sanitiser, produced continuously at lower concentration, which is why it feels gentler on skin and eyes.

Why does my salt pool's pH keep rising?

It is inherent to how the cell works, not a fault. Regular acid dosing is a normal part of running a salt pool.

Can I use granular chlorine in a salt pool?

For occasional shock dosing, yes — but check whether it is stabilised, because that is how cyanuric acid accumulates in a pool that never needed it.

How much salt should I add after heavy rain?

It depends how much the pool was diluted or overflowed. Test rather than guess — too much salt is harder to fix than too little, since the only remedy is draining.

My chlorine reads fine but the pool is cloudy. Why?

Often high stabiliser locking the chlorine up, sometimes filtration. Both show up in a water test, so bring a sample in before buying anything.

Do you stock parts for older equipment?

Often, and we can order most of what we do not hold. Bring the old part or a photo of the data plate.

Should I switch my pool to salt?

Possibly, but not automatically. We will look at your existing equipment and how you use the pool before recommending it.

Next step

If your chlorine never seems to hold, the answer usually is not more chlorine. Bring a water sample and a photo of your equipment down to Bulcock Street and we will tell you what you have got and what it needs. Call 07 5438 1588 if you would rather check we are open first.
