Should I stock up on chemicals before summer?

Chlorine and salt, yes — you will use them and buying larger is cheaper. Specialty products like flocculant are better bought when needed; several degrade in storage and you may not need them at all.

Does liquid chlorine lose strength?

Yes, steadily, and faster in heat and light. Buying a summer's worth in October means dosing with something weaker than the label says by February.

What do I need to do over winter?

Less, not nothing. Some circulation, a low chlorine residual and ideally a cover. Fully abandoning a pool from June is what causes spring recoveries.

What is stabiliser actually for?

It shields chlorine from UV. Without it, summer sun here strips free chlorine within hours. Too much locks the chlorine up instead — which is why it is tested rather than guessed.

Is water testing really free?

Yes, whether you buy anything or not. Plenty of tests come back fine and we say so.

How do I take a good water sample?

Elbow depth, away from the skimmer and return jet, in a clean sealed container, brought in the same day and kept out of the sun on the drive over.
